A recent study published last December in the US Journal of Science revealed that the best way to avoid baldness is to prevent hair loss in the first place . It might seem contradictory but the main finding is a very thin and previously unknown muscle that surrounds hair follicles, called the dermal sheath.

In the life cycle of every human hair, cells called dermal papillae create a new hair shaft. These specific cells start at the base of growing hair follicles but slowly move up to the stem cells at the tip of the follicle.

“These cells receive signals from nearby dermal papilla cells to initiate the next phase of growth and create a new hair shaft, while the previous one is lost,” the researchers said in a press release. However, this bond between cells is sometimes broken down, which could play a role in hair loss. Researchers have long wondered how cells from the dermal papilla return to the stem level.

Working with mice, “we found an answer to this question by discovering that the dermal sheath surrounding growing hair follicles is in fact smooth muscle, whose function is to contract and push the hair shaft and pull the dermal papilla.” as well as potentially halting the hair growth cycle before the ‘destruction’ phase, with a slight modification of the skin sheath which could also prevent the hair follicle from going dormant.This is important because dormant hair follicles cannot be reactivated; as a result, hair cannot be regenerated,” said Dr. Michael Rendl, Associate Director of the Black Family Stem Cell Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine in Mount Sinai, New York.

It happens quite naturally, but when it does, baldness often starts to set in. According to Rendl, this new understanding of how the skin sheath works could shed more light on hair loss research.

Rendl believes that blocking the contraction and stopping the destruction phase can preserve the existing hair shaft, which is otherwise lost during the production of a new shaft.
