Anybody who’s experienced hair loss has seen advertisements for special shampoos that promise to regrow hair and wondered if it’s real. The idea of a shampoo that can help us regrow lost hair and restore our youthful appearance sounds like it’s too good to be true. Unfortunately, this is usually the case.

There are countless shampoos and hair products out there that claim to revitalize hair growth and help us regrow hair that we’ve lost over time, and there are others that simply claim to prevent further hair loss.

In both these cases, the promised outcomes are very unlikely because they fail to address the true nature of hair loss.

Why Do We Lose Hair?

There are several reasons for hair loss, but the condition that most people are referring to when they ask about it is male pattern baldness (despite the name, this condition can also affect women). The medical term for male pattern baldness is androgenetic alopecia.

Male pattern baldness occurs through hormonal changes that happen within our hair follicles. Testosterone is converted to androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes male pattern baldness by deactivating the follicles in the scalp.

Hair loss can also be caused by scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis (more commonly known as dandruff) or psoriasis.

When is Hair Growth Shampoo Effective?

In the latter cases when the scalp is being affected by a condition such as dandruff or psoriasis, growth shampoos can be effective by treating the condition.

For instance, dandruff is caused by yeast on the scalp. Shampoos containing antifungal agents can work against the yeast and allow the hair follicles to function again.

With psoriasis, inflammation of the scalp is usually what’s causing hair loss. Treating that inflammation will allow for hair growth to continue.

Why Isn’t Hair Growth Shampoo Effective for Male Pattern Baldness?

In the case of male pattern baldness, the DHT is deactivating hair follicles, as we mentioned before.

Many hair regrowth or hair loss prevention shampoos claim to block DHT from affecting the scalp, but the reason they’re ineffective is very simple: The shampoo doesn’t remain in contact with your scalp for nearly long enough periods of time for any DHT blockers to be effective.

There are doctor-prescribed medications, such as finasteride and minoxidil, that can be effective in blocking DHT and aiding in the prevention of hair loss. However, the reality is that shampoos just aren’t going to help.
