One question that gets asked a lot is whether or not one’s diet affects the way one looks. The answer is that, yes, your diet affects the way you look.

Not only does diet affect your appearance, it affects almost every aspect of how you look, from the top of your head down to your feet.

In fact, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that diet is one of the most overall important factors when it comes to looking young and healthy! In addition, diet is an integral part of your body’s health and wellness.

Here are three ways in which the things that you eat affect the way that you look.

How Diet Affects Weight

The most obvious factor of your appearance in relation to what you eat is the size and shape of your body. Eating too much leads to weight gain that affects our looks and ability to move around. Not eating enough leads to weight loss, which can also be extremely unhealthy if not monitored.

A lot of people, usually fitness instructors or athletic equipment merchants, want us to believe that the most important factor in weight gain/weight loss is getting exercise and training our muscles. While muscle development can aid in burning extra calories, exercise is nowhere near as impactful to your body’s weight as monitoring what you eat.

The food you eat is what fuels your body and fills it with necessary life-sustaining nutrition. Calories are how that energy is measured. If you eat food that contains more calories than your body is naturally burning, then you will gain weight.

Similarly, if your body doesn’t get enough calories to maintain its energy level, it will begin to burn calories stored in fat and muscle. This causes you to lose weight.

Not only does weight affect the way that we appear, but it affects our overall health. Having too much weight means that the heart, the muscles, and even the bones need to work harder to support us. Having not enough weight means that our body’s systems aren’t able to operate at their optimal levels because there isn’t enough energy to draw from.

How Diet Affects Skin

Your diet affects your skin in several ways. At the fundamental level, our skin is healthier looking and more supple when it contains healthy levels of a protein called collagen.

Collagen is directly related to your skin’s elasticity. Less elasticity means more wrinkles and a thinner appearance of the skin. When you eat healthy, nutrient-rich foods, your body is better able to produce this skin-nurturing protein and your skin appears younger.

Another thing to consider is how your diet affects acne and the skin’s clarity. Research has found that diets containing a lot of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, and other low-fat foods lead to less pimples and acne on the skin.

How Diet Affects Hair

One thing that people often overlook is how important a healthy diet is to having healthy hair. It is a part of your body, after all, and we know that the things we eat affect our body’s health.

For instance, the scalp is a particularly vulnerable area of our bodies. An unhealthy diet can cause it to become dry and even cause you to have dandruff. For a healthy scalp, your diet should include some basics like vitamins A, C, and E. Foods like citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, and fish liver oil can all be a great way to obtain these vitamins.

More importantly, you have to drink a lot of water to keep your scalp healthy and fresh. Water is an incredibly important part of our diet. When you don’t drink enough water, you become dehydrated and this affects your scalp in a very negative way.

In terms of your actual hair, biotin and vitamins B-5, B-6, and B-12 are all beneficial to the health of your hair shaft. Without these nutrients, hair can become dry and brittle. Eating foods like whole grains, egg yolk, and a variety of vegetables will keep your hair looking shiny and healthy!
